There are three types of membership into the IHSRA. The first is as a Competing Member. These members must be a high school student, and are eligible to compete at all IHSRA rodeos. The second is an Associate Member. These members must also be a high school student, but an Associate Member does not compete in rodeo competition. Instead an Associate Member generally serves in some other capacity or role within the Association (photographer, journalist, arena help, are just a few examples of what an Associate Member may do within the organization). The third membership is an Adult State Membership. For each Competing or Associate Membership, there is one free Adult State Membership granted for one of the parents of the high school member. Should a second parent or other adult wish to become an Adult State Member, through payment of a State Association Due, this membership can be obtained.
If you are a high school student and you think you may be interested in Indiana High School Rodeo, we encourage you to join either as a Competing Member (any level of experience is welcome to compete) or as an Associate Member (if you would rather become more familiar with the events and the Association). Although at this time we do not have formal clinics and education on events, several within our Association are willing to assist new members and those new to the sport of rodeo.
Each high school member (either Competing or Associate Member) must complete/provide a National High School Rodeo Assocation, an Indiana High School Rodeo Association application, permission
sheet, medical release, announcer sheet, copy of birth certificate and report
card in order to become a member. The Medical Release MUST be signed by BOTH parents.
Your principal must sign that you meet conduct and grade requirements. The
forms must be notarized where indicated. Along with the application, National and State dues are required and listed below. The dues for Competing and Associate High School Members does include an amount for insurance premium.
The Rodeo Season runs from August through July ending with the National High School Finals Rodeo each year, but you are welcome to join anytime throughout the season.
Membership Application Information can be found on this page as soon as the applications for the 2008-2009 have been received from the National High School Rodeo Assocition. Should you have any questions or need additional information, contact Lisa Colby, State Secretary at lcolby@aol.com or call or (317) 716-0965 (mobile).
Rodeo Information and Fees:
Rodeos are scheduled through-out Indiana as well as adjoining states of Ohio,
Kentucky, Illinois and Michigan (see the Rodeo Schedule & Info page for events currently scheduled). Entry information and forms are sent to each competing member and/or may be posted on this website (Rodeo Schedule & Info page).
A deadline will be established for entry at each rodeo.
Generally entry fees for in-state rodeos are $20 each. Each contestant is
charged a one time per weekend office fee of $10 and a scholarship contribution
of $6 per rodeo. Additional fees that you could expect include: stall fee per
horse, camping, electric and parent/family admission passes.
Stalls are mandatory in some locations.
Typically out of state entries are between $20 and $25 per event with the
same type of fees expected. The out of state entry forms require either a signature
by the school principal/representative or our National Director. Additional
information may be required when traveling to other states, particularly Coggin’s
testing, health papers and livestock permits.
Event average awards and all-around awards are sometimes offered at a rodeo. Payback
for each event is offered on a sliding scale based on the number of competitors in each event ($5 of each entry fee is added to the jackpot payback).
Each contestant is also required to raise at least $175 in sponsorships
by the designated dates within the Season and participate/work at the Hoosier Horse Fair.
Awards are offered at year end. A contestant must compete in that specific event in at least
50% of the rodeos to receive year end awards in that event.
The Association also takes great pride in awarding savings bonds and scholarships each year. These are also awarded at year end.
The 4 top competitors in each event are then qualified as a member of the Indiana High School Rodeo Team and given the opportunity to compete in the National
High School Finals Rodeo. Finals will be held in Farmington, New Mexico in 2009. A competitor may also qualify for the National Wrangler All Star Team by being in the top two of underclassmen in a particular event.
